Why Old Line Angling? A Story of Maryland Heritage and Military Service
Share
The Origins of Maryland's "Old Line" Legacy
Maryland earned its nickname "The Old Line State" through an extraordinary act of courage during the American Revolution. In August 1776, at the Battle of Brooklyn, a unit known as the "Maryland 400" made a series of heroic charges against overwhelming British forces. These brave Marylanders, many equipped with bayonets their fellow Continental soldiers lacked, held the line against nearly 2,000 British troops and Hessian mercenaries.
Their sacrifice was not in vain - this decisive action allowed General George Washington's army to escape capture, potentially saving the American Revolution in its early stages. The Maryland troops' exceptional discipline and bravery earned them Washington's deep respect and gave birth to Maryland's enduring nickname: "The Old Line State."
From One Line to Another: A Marine's Journey
As a Marine Corps infantry veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, I understand the profound meaning of "holding the line." This connection between Maryland's historical line infantry and my service created a natural bridge to my post-military passion: fly fishing.
Where Heritage Meets the Water
The term "line" carries special significance in military service and fly fishing. Just as Maryland's original line infantry required precision, patience, and dedication, so too does the art of fly fishing. Every cast requires focus, every presentation demands attention to detail, and success comes from understanding your equipment and environment.
Why Old Line Angling?
Our name embraces three interconnected themes:
1. Maryland's proud military heritage as The Old Line State

These elements combine to create more than just a fishing guide service - they represent a commitment to excellence, respect for tradition, and dedication to craft that defines everything we do at Old Line Angling.
